A Little Night Music comes to Wavestage
NEWMARKET, ON - Wavestage Theatre Company proudly announces its upcoming production of the Tony Award-winning musical Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, playing March 26-29, 2026 at the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre.
This elegant, witty masterpiece of musical theatre makes its much-anticipated return to the stage, blending tender romance with razor-sharp humour in an unforgettable weekend of tangled loves and laughter.
Inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s cinematic classic Smiles of a Summer Night, A Little Night Music follows the enchanting Desirée Armfeldt, a celebrated actress whose chance reunion with an old flame sets off a cascade of romantic misadventures. Over the course of one magical weekend, passions ignite, jealousies flare, and love’s complex dance unfolds with sophistication and wit - all set to one of musical theatre’s most sublime scores.
A Little Night Music will feature an All-Canadian cast, including Kerry Hobbs (Desiree Armfeldt), Rick Schiralli (Frederik Egerman), Hayley Pickess (Anne Egerman), Harper Asch (Fredrika Armfeldt), Robert Black (Henrik Egerman), Gina Patricio (Madame Armfeldt), Emily Vick Agnew (Countess Charlotte Malcolm), John Edwards (Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm), and Lily Davids (Petra). The Liebeslieder Quintet will be portrayed by Emma Lander, Jo-Han Wang, Madeleine Kennedy, Natalie MacLagan and Isaac Lim. Ensemble performances by Kenneth Murphy, Katherine O’Neil, Michael Rosa, Kelly Martin, Cece Stollery and Athena Agnew.
Director Sarah Langford describes A Little Night Music as “one of the great ensemble pieces in musical theatre - a work where no single character carries the evening, but rather the beautiful collision of desires, regrets, and second chances among a group of exquisitely human adults creates the magic. Every voice weaves into the fabric of the storytelling, like an intricate waltz constantly in motion.” Langford adds, “What surprises audiences most is just how funny it is. Sondheim’s wit is razor-sharp, and the humour feels both sophisticated and deeply relatable. In late March, when we’re all ready to shake off the winter chill, this story offers warmth, romance, and laughter - a reminder that love can surprise us at any age.”
