24th Season Announcement

As we enter our 24th Season of exceptional entertainment, Wavestage is very proud to support actors with productions that add vivid culture to our community. We are bursting with excitement for this season featuring three MainStage productions and one youth production throughout 2018/19. We aspire to create influential works of great magnitude that open doors for many performers, looking to stretch their wings. As always, we aim to create an environment in which our performers feel they have grown and have been artistically challenged from their experiences at Wavestage. With these productions and the stories they tell, we believe each performer will have the chance to touch the hearts of many audience members.

For our audiences, we seek an experience where they leave the theatre feeling their minds opened and their souls touched. After all, live theatre is not just intended to entertain, but to make us feel something powerful. This season asks our audiences to explore themes of moral responsibility, fearing the “other” and finding one’s purpose through love for one another - all topics of extreme importance in today’s global climate.

We begin this July 6-8, 2018 at the Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto with The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The musical was written by two masters of musical theatre canon, Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. Audiences and actors will be transported by an unspeakably gorgeous score, with its lush, emotionally rich songs augmented by a large choir. Audiences will be swept away by the beautiful telling of Victor Hugo’s story of love, aloneness, obsession and heroism. This production will begin rehearsals in Toronto on April 24th, 2018.

Next up, Wavestage Theatre presents the Tony Award Winning Broadway Masterpiece - HELLO DOLLY! from November 22-25, 2018 at Newmarket Theatre.

Feel the room swayin’, for the band’s playin’, one of your old fav’rite songs from way back when” - the grande dame musical of them all returns to Wavestage Theatre. Hello, Dolly! is the story of turn-of-the-century widowed matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi, who, after cunningly negotiating marriages for others through a series of comic romantic entanglements, ultimately finds her own match. HELLO, DOLLY! is a magical piece of musical theatre filled with memorable songs such as 'Put On Your Sunday Clothes', 'Before the Parade Passes By', and 'It Only Takes A Moment.' Show-stopping dance numbers like 'Dancing' and 'The Waiter's Gallop' are combined with beautiful turn-of-the-century costumes to create a musical the whole family will enjoy! This production will begin rehearsals September 5, 2018  in Toronto.

West Side Story, one of the greatest love stories of all time, opens at Newmarket Theatre, April 11-14, 2019.

This timeless classic mesmerizes audiences of all ages from the first note to the final breath. The Bernstein and Sondheim score is considered to be one of Broadway’s finest and features beloved American musical theatre classics including “Something’s Coming,” “Tonight,” “America,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere.” With spectacular dance numbers and an iconic score soaring throughout, theatre goers will experience the tragic love story between lead characters Maria, and Tony, each from different neighbourhoods in New York City. The strength of their love cannot overcome the hatred between warring street gangs the Sharks and the Jets. Rehearsals beginning January 2019. Auditions for this production will be held October 2018.
