23rd Season Announcement
Wavestage Theatre is incubating for its 23rd Season three vibrant MainStage productions and one youth production throughout 2017-18. We aspire to produce influential works of great magnitude that open doors for performers looking to stretch their wings with exciting new opportunities. As always, we aim to create an environment in which our performers feel they have grown and have been artistically challenged from their experiences at Wavestage. With these productions, we believe each performer will have the chance to touch the hearts of many audience members with human truths.
For our audiences, we seek an experience whereby they leave the theatre feeling their hearts opened and their souls touched. After all, live theatre is not just intended for entertainment, but to make us feel something powerful. This season is about human truths, human trials and tribulations and, ultimately, love.
We begin this July 2017 at the Richmond Hill Centre for Performing Arts with Titanic, the Musical. The musical follows the historical story and real lives of its passengers. In the final hour of April 14, 1912 the RMS Titanic, on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, collided with an iceberg and ‘the unsinkable ship’ slowly sank. It was one of the most tragic disasters of the 20th Century. 1517 men, women, and children lost their lives. Based on actual people aboard the most infamous ship in the world, Maury Yeston (Nine, Grand Hotel) and Peter Stone’s stunning musical focuses on their hopes and aspirations. Unaware of the fate that awaits them, the Third Class immigrants dream of a better life in America, the newly-enfranchised Second Class dream of achieving the lifestyles of the rich and famous, and the millionaire Barons of the First Class dream of their hegemony lasting forever. This production will begin rehearsals May 2017 in Toronto.
For participants in our youth programs, we will be producing a youth-only production of the classic story A Christmas Carol at Newmarket Theatre (December 2017). This production will be rehearsed in Newmarket beginning September 2017 (Term One). Registrations for our 23rd Season youth programs will be opening in February.
Continuing our MainStage season in January 2018, we are thrilled to bring a new musical to Newmarket Theatre, Big Fish. Based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed Columbia Pictures film directed by Tim Burton, Big Fish centers on Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest… and then some! Edward's incredible, larger-than-life stories thrill everyone around him – most of all, his devoted wife Sandra. But their son Will, about to have a child of his own, is determined to find the truth behind his father’s epic tales. This beautiful musical is overflowing with heart, humour and spectacular life moments that remind us why we love going to the theatre – for an experience that's richer, funnier and BIGGER than life. This production will be rehearsed in Toronto beginning September 2017.
Finally, in the spring (2018) at Newmarket Theatre we will bring our final production of the season, Billy Elliot. Based on the acclaimed film, and supported with music by Elton John, Billy Elliot is an inspiring tale of courage, ambition, and overcoming adversity. Set in a mining town in the north of England against the background of the 1984-85 miners’ strike, Billy Elliot is the inspirational story of a young boy’s struggle against the odds to make his dream come true. Billy stumbles out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that inspires his family and whole community and changes his life forever. Rehearsals beginning January 2018 in Newmarket.
