The young performers had been rehearsing since September; weekly practices furthered their skills in dance, singing, and acting.

Big Fish Table Read

Big Fish Table Read

Big Fish, The Musical is making its way to Newmarket Theatre this January. The cast recently joined for their first table read and we are thrilled to share a peek behind-the-scenes at this exciting rehearsal. The table read was truly a high-energy event and unlike any table read we've seen. Cast members broke out into laughter, Alabama stompin', and tears as they told this heartwarming tale together for the first time.

TITANIC, The Musical at RHCPA

TITANIC, The Musical at RHCPA

It's time for another production to "sail on"! Titanic The Musical ran for a limited run at Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts from July 13-16. Maury Yeston and Peter Stone’s masterfully crafted musical examines the lives of the passengers aboard the doomed luxury liner Titanic — those in first class, middle class, and steerage — in the nights leading up the ship’s fatal encounter with an iceberg at sea. Directed by Sarah Langford & Rhiannon Langford, with musical direction by Bradley Barnham, Titanic is a heart-stopping and riveting ride through the final moments of the hopes and aspirations of those onboard.

Enjoy this look back at the first production in our 23rd Season.

23rd Season Announcement

Wavestage Theatre is incubating for its 23rd Season three vibrant MainStage productions and one youth production throughout 2017-18. We aspire to produce influential works of great magnitude that open doors for performers looking to stretch their wings with exciting new opportunities. As always, we aim to create an environment in which our performers feel they have grown and have been artistically challenged from their experiences at Wavestage. With these productions, we believe each performer will have the chance to touch the hearts of many audience members with human truths.

For our audiences, we seek an experience whereby they leave the theatre feeling their hearts opened and their souls touched. After all, live theatre is not just intended for entertainment, but to make us feel something powerful. This season is about human truths, human trials and tribulations and, ultimately, love.

We begin this July 2017 at the Richmond Hill Centre for Performing Arts with Titanic, the Musical. The musical follows the historical story and real lives of its passengers. In the final hour of April 14, 1912 the RMS Titanic, on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, collided with an iceberg and ‘the unsinkable ship’ slowly sank. It was one of the most tragic disasters of the 20th Century. 1517 men, women, and children lost their lives. Based on actual people aboard the most infamous ship in the world, Maury Yeston (Nine, Grand Hotel) and Peter Stone’s stunning musical focuses on their hopes and aspirations. Unaware of the fate that awaits them, the Third Class immigrants dream of a better life in America, the newly-enfranchised Second Class dream of achieving the lifestyles of the rich and famous, and the millionaire Barons of the First Class dream of their hegemony lasting forever. This production will begin rehearsals May 2017 in Toronto.

For participants in our youth programs, we will be producing a youth-only production of the classic story A Christmas Carol at Newmarket Theatre (December 2017). This production will be rehearsed in Newmarket beginning September 2017 (Term One). Registrations for our 23rd Season youth programs will be opening in February.

Continuing our MainStage season in January 2018, we are thrilled to bring a new musical to Newmarket Theatre, Big Fish. Based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed Columbia Pictures film directed by Tim Burton, Big Fish centers on Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest… and then some! Edward's incredible, larger-than-life stories thrill everyone around him – most of all, his devoted wife Sandra. But their son Will, about to have a child of his own, is determined to find the truth behind his father’s epic tales. This beautiful musical is overflowing with heart, humour and spectacular life moments that remind us why we love going to the theatre – for an experience that's richer, funnier and BIGGER than life. This production will be rehearsed in Toronto beginning September 2017

Finally, in the spring (2018) at Newmarket Theatre we will bring our final production of the season, Billy Elliot.  Based on the acclaimed film, and supported with music by Elton John, Billy Elliot is an inspiring tale of courage, ambition, and overcoming adversity. Set in a mining town in the north of England against the background of the 1984-85 miners’ strike, Billy Elliot is the inspirational story of a young boy’s struggle against the odds to make his dream come true. Billy stumbles out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that inspires his family and whole community and changes his life forever. Rehearsals beginning January 2018 in Newmarket.

We are very excited to produce shows that we know will become a part of our audiences heart and soul. Wavestage is very proud to be producing our 23rd Season of entertaining, thought-provoking theatre. We invite you to join us for one of our most ambitious seasons yet!

Auditions will begin January 2017. Please click the link below to learn more about our audition requirements and to book an audition.

SHREK The Musical at Newmarket Theatre

“Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek…” And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand...and his name is Shrek.

Our opening night audience was thrilled by Shrek the Musical! Only four performances remain. Don't miss this show at Newmarket Theatre.
